How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews

My only issue was that the room was just a little too hot for us - but admittedly, we like things to be cooler than usual. I wish there was a way to control the thermostat as it made sleeping a little less pleasant than it should have been!
Property was beautiful, staff excellent and accommodating.

Poor room decor state / poor bathroom equipment / zero heating on either bathroom or bedroom. Albeit I was told after check,in that general renovations are underway, this information would have been more palatable if declared in advance.

More hangers, and it was a shame the refurb didn't extend to the beautiful stairs and landing.
We stayed in a suite and it was extremely comfortable, everything recently refurbished. Didn't stay for breakfast and dinner, but on a separate occasion we did and found it to be very tasty and perfectly served.

The room was a little too hot. It is tricky time of year with temperatures being up and down so I recognise it can be difficult to get the right temp for everyone. It’s not something that bothered me too much and wouldn’t stop me staying again.
The room was lovely and the bed was super comfy. The bath was deep so perfect for a long soak. Staff were so lovely and accommodating. The food was really lovely with very generous portions. Service was fab and the dining room very lovely. I would recommend anyone to stay there.

One of our rooms was dated, dirty blind in bathroom, bathroom radiator not working, cigarette butts everywhere outside in the courtyard- not great when you are staying with children.

The bed was very small and uncomfortable. Only 2 pillows which had been well used so we're rock hard. No room service.

The shower was not very powerful - I would have struggled to rinse my hair if I’d washed it! Also took ages to get hot - and then wasn’t as hot as I’d like.
Beautiful hotel with lovely grounds. Our room was spotlessly clean and a very generous size.

Could have clearer footpaths around the gardens to make the most of the lovely grounds.

Everything was fine but mentioned to the Receptionist on checking out that the toilet needed maintenance ashaving flushed the water kept running into the bowl.
I stayed here last December and really enjoyed it. It's an excellent location for me and the good thing is they take pets whereas the Lion Hotel in Belper don't. We were only there one night and having the dog we couldn't stay in the main house but a room in the outside block which was fine. The room was extremely spacious and warm which was nice. The dog was allowed in certain parts of the main hotel. Front desk staff were excellent. It is a 5 minute walk from one of the best real ale pubs in Belper - The Hollybush Inn so a big plus.

The decor in the rooms is incredibly tired and dated. I was in room 11 and I was pretty disappointed given the amount I paid to stay there. The bathroom looked like it hadn’t been updated for about 25 years.
Staff are very helpful and friendly, beautiful grounds.
