The area had a good mix of shops, bars etc and prices were reasonable. You can choose to stay in central higher end hotels or cheaper options on the periphery but tuktuks only cost about 700rps from one end to the other. Perhaps 1500rps in the evening. We preferred staying outside the main area because it was much quieter but so easy to walk into town along the beautiful beach.

Hikkaduwa is big village and it has two beaches: near the village center (beach called Hikkaduwa) and further south stretching to Dodanduwa (this beach is called Narigama). You can enjoy waves and walking along the beach or take a trip to any desired location, or taste fresh sea foods directly on the market or be part of local party. Also, Viraj offered to prepare breakfast for us. You should definitely go with the Sri Lankan style breakfast. Each day we got something different (eg. egg hoppers, string hoppers, dal, some kind of coconut milk rice and more). And a fresh fruit platter was part of it each day. Viraj and his family are very kind and helpful people. They will make your stay unforgettable.
